16th Infantry Regiment
Constituted 3 May 1861 in the Regular Army as the 1st Battalion, 11th Infantry.
Organized July 1861 – February 1862 at Fort Independence, Massachusetts, and Perryville, Maryland.
Reorganized and redesignated 5 December 1866 as the 11th Infantry.
Consolidated 28 March – 6 April 1869 with the 34th Infantry (see annex) and consolidated unit designated as the 16th Infantry.
Assigned 8 June 1917 to the 1st Expeditionary Division (later redesignated as the 1st Infantry Division).
Relieved 15 February 1957 from assignment to the 1st Infantry Division and reorganized as a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System.
Withdrawn 28 February 1983 from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System with Headquarters at Fort Riley, Kansas.
